Which CR2450 is safe for a Suunto?

A CR2450 is 24.5 mm across and 5.0 mm tall whoever makes it, but the cans are not all the same shape. What varies is the stepped rim where the metal is folded over, and in a compartment as tight as a Suunto D-series a higher rim stops the cell seating all the way down. Suunto also built the D-series with two different baffle plates - earlier units with a rubber baffle need a cell whose base steps in, later units with a hard plastic baffle take a standard flat-sided cell. That is why the same brand fits one diver's computer and not the next one's.

The rule: the battery cover must seat flush and screw home without force. If you have to press hard to close it, the cell is not deep enough - stop there rather than forcing it. A cover that cannot sit flat cannot compress the O-ring, and that O-ring is the only thing keeping water out at depth.

Trouble comes from discount and house-brand cells far more often than from the established names, so our D4 / D4i and D6 / D6i kits let you choose between Energizer, Murata and Varta. The Varta has the most pronounced step at the base, so it seats deepest and is the one to pick for an older unit; Murata is what used to be Sony. Tip: The Novo series (Zoop Novo, Vyper Novo) has a screw-down battery hatch — a battery tool makes the job easy. Always replace the O-ring when you change the battery to keep your computer sealed, and apply a thin film of silicone grease.
