Most newly certified divers do not have a knowledge problem. They have a specific, nagging problem in the water — air that runs out first, a depth they cannot hold, ears that will not clear. This is a library of those problems, organised by symptom rather than by syllabus, with the causes, one thing to try, and a way to measure whether it worked. Every claim is sourced.

I use my air too quickly
Using your air too quickly can shorten every dive. Improve trim, streamline your kit, ease your pace and track your personal SAC rate carefully.
BuoyancyI cannot hold a hover or a steady depth
If you cannot hold a steady hover, improve your weighting, make small early BCD adjustments and practise relaxed, natural breathing control.
BuoyancyI am too vertical and lose trim
Poor trim creates drag, fatigue and silt. Balance your weighting, streamline your setup and practise a relaxed horizontal position with your buddy.
Equipment & techniqueI carry too much lead
Too much lead makes buoyancy unstable and increases drag. Do a proper weight check, account for your cylinder and adjust in small increments.
MindsetI feel panic or acute anxiety underwater
Panic underwater narrows attention and can trigger a rapid ascent. Pause, breathe, assess the problem and practise calm responses with your buddy.
Equipment & techniqueI cannot equalize my ears and feel pain
Ear pain and failed equalization can end a dive. Descend slowly, equalize early and often, and stop immediately if discomfort or pain develops.
NavigationI lose my buddy or do not monitor the environment
Buddy separation is often preventable. Agree distance, pace and procedures before entry, then maintain frequent visual or physical contact throughout.
NavigationI lose my direction underwater
Losing direction underwater raises stress and gas use. Combine a level compass with natural navigation, checkpoints and an agreed return plan.
Equipment & techniqueWater in my mask makes me panic
A flooded mask can feel overwhelming, but your regulator is still supplying gas. Build confidence with calm partial-mask clears in shallow water.
BuoyancyI shoot upward and cannot hold a safety stop
An uncontrolled ascent can develop as gas expands near the surface. Vent early, preserve enough gas and practise a stable safety stop at 5 m.
MindsetDepth makes me anxious and I do not recognise narcosis
Depth anxiety and narcosis can impair judgement. Set conservative limits, monitor each other with your buddy and ascend slowly if symptoms appear.
Thermal comfortI get cold too quickly
Getting cold reduces dexterity, raises gas use and can end a dive. Choose the right exposure suit, protect your hands and warm up between dives.
BuoyancyI kick hard but swim inefficiently
Inefficient finning wastes gas and stirs silt. Improve horizontal trim, use a measured frog kick and add a glide between deliberate strokes.
MindsetI feel rusty and anxious after a break
After a break from diving, refresh core skills in easy conditions. Recheck weighting, practise with a buddy and build confidence before adding challenge.

- What is happening. The symptom described as you would actually experience it, with a short self-check.
- Why it happens. The recognised causes, ordered from most to least common, each with the physics or physiology behind it and a source you can go and read.
- What to try on your next dive. One task. Not a list of ten tips — those are how good advice gets ignored.
- How you will know it is working. A measurable criterion, with published reference figures where the agencies publish them, and an honest “not published” where they do not.
Where the content comes from
The material is drawn from published guidance by DAN, PADI, SSI, BSAC, NAUI, CMAS, TDI/SDI, Dive Training and Scuba Diving magazine, along with peer-reviewed diving medicine literature. Every figure on every page links to the source that published it. Where no agency publishes a number — and for new divers that is more often than you would expect — we say so instead of inventing one.
