Suunto D6 / D6i Battery — FAQ
What battery does the Suunto D6 and D6i use?
A CR2450 3V lithium cell. A complete change also needs a fresh compartment O-ring and a thin film of silicone grease - both are included in this kit. Fitting the cell on its own leaves the old seal in place and risks a flood.
Will any CR2450 fit my Suunto D6i?
No. Suunto built the D6i in two versions: earlier units have a rubber baffle plate in the battery compartment and need a cell whose base steps in, while later units have a hard plastic baffle and take a standard flat-sided cell. The rule that keeps you safe either way: the cover must seat flush and screw home without force. If you have to press hard, the cell is not sitting deep enough - stop, rather than shearing the compartment screw. Full explanation here.
Which brand should I choose - Energizer, Murata or Varta?
All three are major manufacturers, supplied in their own packaging. Of the set, the Varta has the most pronounced step at the base, so it seats deepest and is the one we would reach for first on an older D6i. And if you are matching what Suunto originally fitted, Sony's battery business is now Murata - the Murata CR2450 is the cell many divers still search for as a Sony.
Will I lose my dive log when I change the battery?
No. Suunto states that on the D6i all history and logbook data, along with the altitude, personal and alarm settings, remain in the dive computer memory after a battery change. Other settings revert to their default values, so it is worth checking them before your next dive.
