Introduction
A steady trickle of bubbles from your low-pressure (LP) inflator is almost always down to one tiny part: the O-ring inside the quick-disconnect coupling at the end of the hose. It is a cheap fix you can do yourself in a few minutes — the only fiddly bit is seating the new O-ring deep inside the coupling, which is exactly what a BCD LP hose O-ring insert tool is made for. What you will need
- A new inflator hose O-ring (commonly 7.5 x 1.5 mm)
- A BCD LP hose O-ring insert tool
- An O-ring pick to remove the old one
- A little silicone grease
- A clean, dry cloth
How the seal works
The LP inflator hose ends in a female quick-disconnect (QD) coupling that clips onto the metal nipple of your BCD power inflator. The seal is made by a single small O-ring seated in a recessed groove inside that coupling. When it dries out, flattens or cracks, air escapes — you will see a steady stream of bubbles at the inflator whenever the hose is pressurised.
Step-by-step
- Depressurise first. Close the cylinder valve and purge the regulator so there is no air in the hose. Then unclip the LP hose from the inflator by pulling back the QD collar.
- Remove the old O-ring. Look inside the female coupling — the O-ring sits in a groove near the opening. Gently hook it out with an O-ring pick, taking care not to scratch the sealing surfaces.
- Clean the coupling. Wipe inside with a clean cloth to clear old grease, salt and grit. A clean groove is essential for a good seal.
- Grease the new O-ring. Wipe a thin film of silicone grease onto the new O-ring so it slides in and seats smoothly.
- Seat it with the insert tool. This is the tricky part by hand — the groove is deep and narrow. Slip the new O-ring onto the insert tool, push it into the coupling and release so the O-ring drops evenly into the groove. Check it is sitting flat, not twisted or pinched.
- Reconnect and test. Clip the hose back onto the inflator, pressurise the system and listen. Dunk the connection in water and watch for bubbles. No bubbles means a good seal; if it still leaks, re-check that the O-ring is fully seated and undamaged.
