What is happening

You surface to get your bearings, cannot retrace the route, or end up far from the boat and exit. When orientation is lost, anxiety can quickly increase gas consumption and burden the buddy team.

Why it happens

Ordered from the most common cause down. Open one to see the mechanism behind it.

A compass gives an accurate heading when it is held level in front of your body's centreline. If the card is tilted or the heading is not aligned with your axis, the reading misleads you.

Natural navigation works when you divide a route into recognisable landmarks. Looking back helps you remember how the return route will appear rather than relying only on a memory of the outward direction.

Current can push you off the intended course even when the compass is used correctly. You need a heading correction and a pre-agreed return plan.

  1. Before entry, agree with your buddy on the outward heading, the reciprocal heading home and the key landmarks.
  2. While swimming, hold the compass level in front of your body and confirm the heading with terrain or depth contours.
  3. At every recognisable landmark, turn around and remember the return view.
  4. At the agreed turn point, follow the reciprocal heading and return to the planned point without a navigational surface ascent.
You have done it whenYou and your buddy return along the planned route, and both can identify the last landmark and the direction to the exit.

  • Walk the planned compass course on land before the dive.
  • Write the outward heading, reciprocal heading and buddy-separation plan on a slate.

After the dive, note whether you knew the return direction, recognised landmarks and reached the planned exit without a navigational surface ascent.

Safety
  • Do not solve a navigation error by surfacing and descending again; this increases the risk of pressure-related problems.
  • Before descending, agree with your buddy on a lost-buddy or separation plan and carry the signalling equipment required for the conditions.
  • Do not rely on a compass close to a steel wreck or in an overhead environment.
  • If you deploy an SMB, practise it as a separate skill; entanglement and rapid ascent are primary hazards.
